They are typically used as a substitute for similarly shaped non-rechargeable alkaline batteries, as they feature a slightly lower but generally compatible cell voltage, and are less prone to leaking. Compared to lithium ion and lithium polymer rechargeable battery packs, NiMH cells are a far more economical choice.
When fast-charging, it is advisable to charge the NiMH cells with the smart battery charger to avoid overcharging, which can damage cells.

The NiMH battery charging voltage will rise as the charging current and/or temperature of the battery increase.
